WNBA Playoff Watch | A Full Slate Of Important Tuesday Games
It’s officially crunch time in the 2019 WNBA season and nothing about the postseason is clear yet. We’re tracking every game, keeping a close eye on the standings and giving you day-to-day updates on how everything else happening around the league impacts the Lynx.
Lynx Standing: No. 7 with a record of 15-15. They hold a one game lead over the eighth-place Mercury and are a half-game behind the No. 6 Storm.
Clinched: Mystics, Sun, Sparks, Aces, Sky, Storm.
Eliminated: Dream.
Who To Root For In Tuesday’s Games (Other Than The Lynx):
Aces at Fever (ESPN3)
The Lynx are one loss by the Fever away from clinching a playoff spot, so this one is a no-brainer. The Aces have slipped to fourth in the league after their loss to the Lynx on Sunday, but they are still only 2.5 games out of first. They will want to win badly. The Fever are showing a lot of fight and though they are a big longshot to make the playoffs they are not technically eliminated, and they will come to play. Nevertheless, the Aces have the more talented roster and should be able to take care of business even on the road.
Mercury at Liberty (ESPN3)
The Mercury are right on the Lynx’s heels for playoff positioning and the Liberty are practically eliminated so Lynx fans should pull for New York to pull off the upset. They will certainly be motivated to do so—the Mercury are the team all the teams out of playoff contention need to catch to have a chance. Crazier things have happened in this league than a team coming back into the playoff race at the last minute so no team should feel safe until there is an ‘X’ by their name. The Lynx are in a good position—they control their own destiny. The Liberty don’t have that luxury, but they will certainly show up to give themselves a chance.
Sparks at Mystics (ESPN2)
It’s never fun to root for the Sparks and luckily for Lynx fans there is no reason to do so. It’s hard to predict where everyone is going to end up because so many teams are so close in the standings right now. Because of that there isn’t much sense to trying to plan for who the Lynx would like to play and not like to play down the line in the playoffs. While this contest means a ton to the Sparks, it doesn’t mean much to the Lynx. Might as well pull for the Mystics.
Sun at Storm (Twitter)
Now here’s a game with implications. If the Lynx beat the Sky and the Storm lose a second-consecutive game, the Lynx would move up to the No. 6 seed. That carries massive meaning because it would mean the Lynx would host a first-round playoff game instead of traveling to play one on the road. There’s no need to explain why that is important. While the Lynx’s first priority must be taking care of business against Chicago, a Storm loss would be extremely beneficial.
