Smith Eclipses 2,500 Points In Her WNBA Career

July 1, 2003 — Lynx guard Katie Smith reached the 2,500-point plateau in Minnesota's 71-69 loss at Houston on Tuesday. She tallied 20 points, giving her 2,501 points in her WNBA career. Smith, the seventh player in WNBA history to register 2,500+ points, achieved the milestone with a free throw with 2:01 remaining in the game.

Smith has played in 139 WNBA games, making her the the second-fastest player in league history to reach the milestone. Houston's Cynthia Cooper passed the 2,500-point mark in 117 games. In Tuesday's game, Houston's Sheryl Swoopes also passed the 2,500-point milestone (145 games). Swoopes, the sixth player to reach the mark, scored 19 points, giving her 2,513 points in her WNBA career.

Smith is the all-time leading scorer in the history of women's professional basketball (ABL/WNBA), with 3,932 points. She scored 1,431 points in two-plus seasons with the Columbus Quest of the ABL.

Earlier this season, Smith, the WNBA's all-time leader in three-point field goals, became the first player to register 300 career three-pointers (June 10). Smith also recorded her 500th professional three-point field goal (ABL/WNBA) on June 27, and she is the category's all-time leader in U.S. women's professional basketball with 507.
