Black History Month Night is February 1 with planned activations throughout the month
MINNEAPOLIS and ST. PAUL (Feb. 1, 2023) – The Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx celebrate Black History Month presented by Deluxe Corporation with a variety of planned programming on and off the court throughout the month of February. Black History Month Night will be celebrated on Feb. 1 when the Wolves host the Golden State Warriors in a Western Conference matchup with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Target Center.
“Deluxe believes in empowering people to be their full authentic selves,” said Barry McCarthy, President and CEO for Deluxe. “We are proud to stand with our partners at the Timberwolves and Lynx to support our commitment to fostering an environment that reflects the diverse communities we serve.”
“Tonight, we fully celebrate Black history and Black excellence,” said Timberwolves and Lynx Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Tru Pettigrew. “And while it is important to recognize and embrace this month, it is imperative that we actively pursue equity during the months outside of February. Change doesn’t happen in one month, but foundations can be laid, steps can be taken, and conversations spurred to drive us towards a more equitable and just society.”
Planned activations and programming throughout the month include:
Black History Month Night – Feb. 1 vs. Golden State Warriors: The night will feature Kimberly Brown performing Lift Every Voice and Sing, Louise Turner singing the national anthem and bdifferent performing at halftime. DJ Chuck Chizzle will serve as the evening’s guest DJ.
Black Men Teach: Halftime will include a special on-court recognition and community gift of $5,000 to Black Men Teach. Black Men Teach is a local nonprofit that works to recruit, prepare, place and retain Black male teachers in elementary schools.
Retail Collection with Hybrid Nation: Founded by Jeremy Sutherland, Hybrid Nation is a socially-conscious streetwear brand that promotes the importance of diversity and social equality through products with a meaningful cause behind them. The limited edition Hybrid Nation Timberwolves collection, designed by Luis Santiago, is available exclusively in the Timberwolves Team Stores (skyway or 100 inside Target Center). RISE Champions of Change: Presented locally by U.S. Bank, the virtual and in-arena experiences will come to life for fans to explore during game days at Target Center on Feb. 1st, 3rd, 5th and 24th. RISE (Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality) is a national nonprofit that educates and empowers the sports community to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice, and improve race relations.
Education Station: Powered by Xcel Energy, the Education Station will visit four youth-serving organizations throughout the Twin Cities. At each visit, up to 100 youth will select a book of their choice and receive a book bag of fun and special items. The Education Station will be stocked with books from Strive Publishing & Bookstore, a Black-owned publishing company, celebrating Black writers, authors, and stories.
Investing in the Black Community: In partnership with Stackwell, the Timberwolves and Lynx are working to eliminate the racial wealth gap. The organization will host two events in February with community partners, gifting individuals with initial funds to aid them in getting started on their investment journey.
