MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Lynx today announced the introduction of the Sylvia Fowles Altruism Award, an annual award recognizing a Lynx player who best embodies the altruistic traits of kindness, selflessness and overall regard for the well-being of others throughout the community. The recipient is selected by a committee of staff and players. In its inaugural year, Lynx forward Napheesa Collier is this year’s recipient of the Sylvia Fowles Altruism Award.
Selected sixth overall in the 2019 WNBA Draft by Minnesota, Collier has long been devoted to communities where she lives and plays, while excelling on the court. Collier serves as a Lynx Dream Team mentor for youth from Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities, regularly attends and participates in community basketball clinics for young girls and boys and devotes her time to advancing the league through a variety of initiatives.
“When determining the eponymous award for Syl, there was no doubt the award would speak to her incredible selflessness, effortless kindness and her genuine ability to leave a lasting impression on all people she encounters,” said Minnesota Lynx General Manager Clare Duwelius. “Syl is one-of-one. She serves as an inspiration and someone whose character we should all strive to mirror within our organization and throughout our communities. Our hope is this award continues to encourage remarkable player character, and Phee is certainly a deserving recipient.”
“I am delighted to have an award named after me,” said former Minnesota Lynx center Sylvia Fowles. “I think it says a lot about my character and who I’ve been as a player. If I had to choose what altruism means, it is somebody who is selfless, somebody who puts others before themselves and somebody who appreciates the ride and enjoys the ride while it lasts.”
Fowles extraordinary career with Minnesota includes two WNBA championships (2015, 2017), 2017 Regular Season MVP, 2017 All-WNBA First Team, three-time All-WNBA Second Team, four-time All-Defensive Team, five-time All-Star and earned the 2022 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. In 222 games with Minnesota, she started all 222.
