MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Lynx today announced on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, its 25th anniversary season and unveiled the 2023 campaign’s commemorative logo. The franchise will celebrate their 25 seasons throughout the season including a weekend-long commemoration June 9-11 with a 25th anniversary game (June 9) and the jersey retirement of Lynx center and legend Sylvia Fowles (June 11). The franchise will also host “Whay Day” (August 4), celebrating Lindsay Whalen’s Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame induction.
Key Highlights for the 2023 season:
Commemorative 25th anniversary season logo: The four stars represent the franchise’s four championships. The number uses the original jersey font from the team’s inaugural year in 1999. The logo incorporates the current Lynx logo, typeface and colors. The top outer points represent Lynx ears and the bottom point represents a fang. Download the 25th anniversary season logo here.
Top 25 Launch, March 1: The team will tip-off a countdown of the top 25 players in Lynx history unveiling five players at a time leading up to the Lynx home opener (May 19) and will highlight each player on Lynx social channels throughout the 2023 season.
25th Anniversary Game, June 9: Former Lynx players and legends will be invited to Target Center on Friday, June 9 (vs. Indiana Fever) to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise. A special postgame ceremony will spotlight each player’s impact and historic accomplishments.
Sylvia Fowles Jersey Retirement, June 11: The Lynx will honor Fowles’ historic career by retiring her jersey following Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks. During her iconic WNBA career, Fowles was drafted and spent seven seasons with the Chicago Sky before being traded to Minnesota for her final eight seasons. Fowles retired at the end of the 2022 season as one of the most decorated players in WNBA history. During her career, Fowles won two WNBA championships and was named Finals MVP both times (2015, 2017), was named league MVP in 2017, is a four-time Defensive Player of the Year (2011, 2013, 2016, 2021), was named to the All-Defensive Team eleven times, earned eight All-WNBA Team honors and is a four-time Olympic gold medalist (2008, 2012, 2016, 2020).
Whay Day, August 4: Four-time WNBA champion and homegrown Minnesota superstar, Lindsay Whalen will be honored at Friday’s game for her 2022 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement. Whalen will be honored during a pregame ceremony, unveiling a new banner. Whalen retired in 2018 after 15 seasons in the WNBA, ending her career as the winningest player in WNBA history.
