Minneapolis/St. Paul – The Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx have named Matthew Caldwell as Chief Executive Officer of the organization, effective September 2. In this role, Caldwell will oversee day-to-day business operations and high-level strategic initiatives for the Timberwolves, Lynx, and Iowa Wolves.

This 10-year commitment sets the stage for the Timberwolves and Lynx to thrive well into the future. By ensuring long-term continuity in leadership, Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez are building a foundation for lasting success. Under Caldwell’s leadership, the organization will cultivate a strong, consistent culture defined by ingenuity, stability, and growth.

“I’m honored and humbled to join the Timberwolves and Lynx organization at such a pivotal moment in its history,” said Matthew Caldwell, CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx. “I am inspired by Marc and Alex’s vision and passion for Minnesota basketball and their commitment to excellence. I look forward to making my mark across the organization, and to building a lasting foundation that gives Minnesota basketball fans what they deserve - the best experience in sports, bar none.”

Caldwell brings over a decade of sports management experience, most recently serving as President & CEO of the Florida Panthers for the past nine years. His tenure saw the Panthers achieve multiple franchise milestones, including consecutive Stanley Cup championships and record setting ticket sales, TV viewership, and sponsorship revenue. Caldwell’s leadership played an instrumental role behind the Panthers’ most successful period in franchise history which culminated with the organization being named 2025 Sports Business Journal Team of the Year. Caldwell first joined the Panthers in 2014 as Chief Operating Officer, before being appointed CEO in 2016, at which time he was the youngest CEO in U.S. professional sports at age 36. He also brings experience as a former Vice President at Goldman Sachs, U.S. Army veteran, and graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

“Our vision is for the Timberwolves and Lynx to set a new standard of excellence in pro sports, and we’re confident that Matthew is the leader needed to make that a reality,” said Co-Chairmen Lore and Rodriguez. “Leading our organization into an innovative new era requires an exceptional individual at the helm, and Matthew’s proven track record leading the business of the Florida Panthers is undeniable. We can’t wait to see the remarkable impact his bold leadership will have on this organization.”

This appointment follows the recent sale of controlling interest in the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx to Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, who assumed the roles of Co-Chairmen in June 2025. Since first joining the franchise as limited partners in 2021, Lore and Rodriguez have championed a forward-thinking, long-term vision focused on establishing the most respected and admired organization in professional sports. The Co-Chairmen’s approach prioritizes investing in high-character individuals to drive business innovation, best-in-class fan experiences, and a high-performance culture.

Caldwell will assume responsibilities from interim-CEO Kelly Laferriere, who has led the organization during its ownership transition period. Laferriere will assume the role of Senior Advisor to Ownership. Tim Connelly, President of Basketball Operations, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Cheryl Reeve, Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations, Minnesota Lynx, will continue to oversee basketball operations for their respective franchises.
