Tanisha Wright Compares Lindsay Whalen And Sue Bird

In the latest LynxLine, Cal Soderquist chats with Lynx wing Tanisha Wright about a variety of topics, including comparing Sue Bird and Lindsay Whalen.

This transcript has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Cal Soderquist: KeyArena, a lot of players have said it’s one of the tougher places to play. You’ve been there, obviously, as someone who benefits from that atmosphere. What makes it one of the tougher arenas?

Tanisha Wright: The main thing is how supportive the fans are. Seattle is a great, great sports city. Their fans come in and out, through and through, every single game there. It doesn’t matter what season it is they’re going through, whatever it is, they’re there every night. They’re loud, they’re supportive, they yell, they cheer, and they love the game of basketball.

Soderquist: Sue Bird, you shared a backcourt with her for several years. She just had that 500-game milestone. What stood out to you with her, maybe behind the scenes, with how she went about her business?

Wright: Sue’s the ultimate professional. She studies her craft. She’s very good at what she does. It’s so easy to learn from her. She’s so knowledgeable and has so much wisdom in terms of the game. She’s so smart. She picks you apart not just in her ability to score, but her ability to facilitate and get everyone else in position to score at their strengths, and that’s the biggest compliment that I can give her. And the fact that she’s very trustworthy playing beside her, I can trust her when I’m out there with her. She’s just an amazing player. She’s probably one of the best point guards we’ve seen in women’s basketball, if not the best.

Soderquist: Do you see some similarities between her and (Lindsay) Whalen? Obviously a different style but in terms of how they feel out their teammates and strengths?

Wright: Definitely different styles, right? Whay is a little bit more brute in terms of her approach to the game, but still an extremely smart player. Super, super competitive. Really loves the moment, you know. Different in their approach, but in terms of their accomplishments, it’s right up there.
