Sims Leads Lynx To A Hard-Fought Victory
In one of the most hard-fought and entertaining games of the season, the Lynx earned their fourth-straight victory, beating the Indiana Fever 81-73.
It was the last home game of the Lynx’s 2019 season and it felt like a party the entire time. The Minnesota crowd showed up in force and made it clear that they had their team’s back as they continue to fight for position in the playoffs.
The Lynx have done themselves proud lately and have moved ahead of the Seattle Storm for the WNBA’s No. 6 seed. While the Storm have one more game left to play than the Lynx and could make things interesting, if the Lynx win the final two games of their season they will be in very good shape.
As has been the case all season, Odyssey Sims was the driving force behind the Lynx’s play on Sunday. She finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists, including a few key plays down the stretch. Additionally, the Lynx got some timely help from Lexie Brown—when it looked like things might be slipping a little late in the third quarter, Brown and Sims brought the Lynx back to life and the fans out of their seats. Temi Fagbenle deserves a shout-out, too. She scored nine points and was perfect from the field in 11 critical minutes while Sylvia Fowles dealt with foul trouble.
The previous two times that Minnesota has faced the Indiana the Lynx have folded a bit down the stretch. That was not the case on Sunday. They tightened up their defense when they needed to most, only allowing 14 Indiana points in the fourth quarter. While Minnesota’s offense wasn’t able to match the incredible results of their last two 90+ point performances, Indiana has a very good defense and Minnesota managed to shoot 44.3 percent from the field and get to the line 17 times.
Critically, the Lynx did a good job on the Fever’s excellent rookie center Teaira McCowan. They frustrated her by forcing her to move around on the defensive end and got her into foul trouble by driving into the paint regardless of her presence there. McCowan is one of a rare few players that has a size advantage over Fowles, so it took a team effort to slow her down. Though there were certainly times when McCowan overwhelmed the Lynx on the boards, Minnesota made her work for everything.
Napheesa Collier had another excellent game, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists and picking up an interesting milestone in the process. She became just the second player in WNBA history to collect at least 400 points, 200 rebounds, 80 assists and 60 steals in their rookie season. The other, fittingly, was Fever great Tamika Catchings. Just another example of Collier starring for this team in every possible way.
The Lynx’s next two games will be tough ones but luckily, they have some time to rest and prepare. They go on the road to face the Phoenix Mercury on Friday and the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday. Both those teams are locked into the playoffs and are fighting for position with the Lynx. They are also both teams with which Minnesota has a fair amount of history. It’s going to be a wild ride.
