Shootaround Report | Collier And Talbot Are Ready For Anything
The Lynx have hit a nice groove lately and much of that has been due to the consistent play of forwards Napheesa Collier and Stephanie Talbot.
Both players were great against the Mercury, with head coach Cheryl Reeve saying that it was Talbot’s best game in a Lynx uniform and Collier picking up her first-ever WNBA double-double.
An area in which both players excel is not letting their offensive production, or lack thereof, affect the way they play.
“It’s all mental, it’s all hustle plays, it’s just doing it,” said Talbot. “Getting out there and doing it. Not talking about it it’s just something you got to do.”
Collier was thrown in the fire a little bit against the Mercury being matched up against the hot-shooting DeWanna Bonner. In the first half, things did not go her way. Bonner went off for 22 points in the and Collier couldn’t get anything going of her own. However, she turned it around dramatically in the second half and out-played the All-Star forward in a Lynx win.
“Allowing her to get so hot in the first half I knew I had to kind of put a little more pressure on her in the second half,” said Collier. “I think it just kind of gave me a boost too knowing that it’s hard to guard people that close, it’s hard to play against too, so just gave me a bit more confidence.”
The attitude that Collier and Talbot have reflects the overall approach of the Lynx organization—taking care of the job in front of them and not worrying about anything else. That will be big tonight as the Lynx work to get themselves in optimal position heading into the second half of the season.
“We focus on whatever game is coming next, we don’t look to the future for anything,” aid Collier. “Executing our game plan—there’s a lot we have to know for tonight—knowing how we’re guarding things, knowing personnel, things like that.”
While both players have had to change roles a lot this year—Collier switching positions and Talbot moving back and forth between the starting lineup and the bench—both have adapted beautifully thanks to the support of their teammates.
“The girls are awesome,” said Talbot. “They’re encouraging, they support me, let me play my game, and when your teammates and coaches encourage you it’s always a lot easier.”
The Lynx take on the Storm tonight at 7:00 at Target Center. Check out our scouting report!
