Scouting Report | Lynx vs. Sun

Lynx vs. Sun, 6 p.m.
Target Center
Fox Sports North, BOB 106.1

Friday night did not go as planned for the Lynx, but luckily, they don’t have to wait long for a chance to get back on track. They face the 11-10 Connecticut Sun on Sunday night.

The Lynx and the Sun both look very different than the last time the two teams met. The Sun have since traded backup guard Alex Bentley to the Dream for Layshia Clarendon, and after a hot start, the Sun are have won just two games of their last six.

That’s not to say they aren’t still dangerous. Just last night they dropped 91 points on the Mercury behind 25 from Courtney Williams and 22 from Chiney Ogwumike. That duo is the engine that makes one of the best offenses in the WNBA go, and it’ll be a tough task to stop them.

If the Lynx want a chance to win, they’re going to need to figure out some of their struggles on offense. Minnesota has only scored over 80 points in two of their last six games, and without the ability to put the ball in the basket consistently, there hasn’t been much room for error on the defensive end.

Against the Aces on Friday, the Lynx allowed almost 50-percent shooting from the field and allowed Las Vegas to score 85 points. That isn’t an awful defensive outing, but shooting only 39.7-percent themselves, the Lynx didn’t give themselves much of a chance to win. Additionally, without Rebekkah Brunson, the Lynx have not been as dominant on the boards as in weeks past. Brunson should be back versus the Sun, so hopefully Minnesota can find their way again.

Critical to an offensive resurgence is the play of Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles. They managed just 19 combined points against the Aces. There are certainly other players on the Lynx who can score, but those two need to produce. The Lynx go as their stars go.

Say what you will about the Lynx, but what is undeniable is that they have showed up this season for big games at home. This one should fit that bill.
