Lynx at Mercury, 9:00 p.m.
Talking Stick Resort Arena
ESPN3, Fox Sports North Plus, BOB 106.1
After a perfect home stand, the Lynx are looking to carry their momentum into Phoenix and take down the red-hot Mercury on the road Friday night.
The Mercury are looking for their ninth win in a row, and have been carried by the strong play of Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner, both averaging over 20 points per game. The Mercury have also gotten good production out of DeWanna Bonner, who torched the Lynx for 24 points the last time the two teams met.
To get the victory in Phoenix it’s going to be important to keep Taurasi off the three-point line. She hit five three-pointers the last time the Lynx played the Mercury. Taurasi and Griner are going to get their points, but locking up their supporting cast and limiting their efficiency will be key. You do not want Taurasi going 11-for-19 like she did last time.
On the offensive end, the Lynx have got to be aggressive in making Griner and Taurasi work. Sylvia Fowles will certainly force Griner into expending some energy on that end, and Seimone Augustus and Danielle Robinson should take it to Taurasi on the other end utilizing their strength and speed, respectively.
The Lynx have a real opportunity on Friday to prove that their solid play as of late is the new norm instead of a flash in the pan. The Mercury are a quality team, and playing on the road is always tough. If the Lynx can get the victory and fight their way back to .500, they’ll be looking at a real opportunity to move up in the standings before the end of the month.
