Lynx fans have continuously learned that when Maya Moore sets her mind to something, there’s little one can do to hold her back.

The Atlanta Dream were reminded of that lesson on July 22, 2014, when Moore racked up a franchise-record 48 points against her guests.

No Lynx player had scored more than 40 points in a single game since Katie Smith did so in 2001, and Moore’s 48 points were just shy of tying Riquina Williams’ WNBA record 51 points.

Now, Moore wasn’t racking up 48 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals for the sake of racking up stats. All of her contributions were needed.

The Lynx claimed a 112-108 double-overtime win against the Dream that day but would likely have taken a loss had it not been for Moore.

Moore shot 16-for-30 from the field, 7-for-9 from 3-points range and sunk nine of her 11 free-throw attempts.

The rest of the team was just 26-for-56 from the field and 1-for-5 from deep.

The Lynx also gave up 50 points in the paint and committed 23 turnovers themselves.

“We needed every single one of them,” Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve told the Star Tribune after the game. “I just told her that. Every single one.”

Moore opened the game with 10 points in the first quarter, added 13 in the second, 15 in the third, five in the fourth and five more in the final overtime.

“That was the best one yet,” teammate Rebekkah Brunson said of Moore’s performance. “It’s unbelievable, but she’s very capable.”

Moore’s career night not only added to what would become an 11-game winning streak for the Lynx, but it also bolstered her MVP odds.

Before her 48-point night, Moore had already recorded nine 30-point nights in the 2014 season. She’d eventually finish the regular season with 10 30-point nights and two 40-point performances.

She led the league in scoring with 23.9 points per game during the 2014 regular season while shooting 48.1% from the field and 33.5% from 3-point range.

“It’s hands down who the MVP is in this league,” Reeve said. “There is nobody close.”

But for Moore, it was just another game.

“I’m just thankful,” she told the Star Tribune. “Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t.”

Fox Sports North will re-air Moore’s 48-point game at 6 p.m. CT on Sunday, June 7.
