MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – Minnesota Lynx Head Coach and General Manager Cheryl Reeve today announced that the team has signed free agent forward Aerial Powers. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released. 

“Aerial Powers is an exciting young player with endless potential,” said Reeve. “She plays with a great deal of passion, is a dynamic scorer, and defends at a high level. We are excited to welcome her to the Lynx family.” 

Powers, a five-year veteran and 2019 WNBA Champion joins the Lynx after spending the first five seasons of her career with the Dallas Wings and the Washington Mystics organizations. In 104 career games (16 starts) she holds averages of 10.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 19.0 minutes per game. In 2020 she played in six games (all starts) for the Mystics and averaged 16.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals. Powers notched career-highs last season, including scoring a career-best 27 points on a career-high 10-of-14 field goals on July 28 against Connecticut.   

During the 2019 Championship run, Powers saw action in all nine playoff games while averaging 7.6 points on a playoff-career-high 45.1% from the field and 3.3 rebounds. Her best game of the 2019 Finals came in Game Four when she scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting and dished out three assists. She holds playoff averages of 7.1 points on 40.2% shooting and 3.0 rebounds in 13.7 minutes per game.  

In 45 total games (13 starts) with the Mystics she averaged 11.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. The 2016 WNBA All-Rookie Team finalist played 59 games (three starts) in the Wings organization, averaging 9.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists before being traded to Washington.  

“I am beyond excited to be joining the Minnesota Lynx this season,” said Powers. “They have a long-standing tradition of excellence and hard work that I know is the best fit for me. I am excited to get to work as we look to bring another championship back to Minnesota and the fans.” 

The Detroit native was selected by the Wings with the fifth overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft after playing three seasons at Michigan State University. She became the first Spartan to be a three-time All-Big Ten First Team honoree. In her junior season, she became Michigan State’s all-time career scorer with 1,803 points and set a single season record with 683 points scored. She played in 96 total games (94 starts) for the Spartans holding career averages of 18.9 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists.  

The Minnesota Lynx will be competing in their 23rd WNBA season, after coming off a trip to the WNBA Semifinals and a 10th straight playoff appearance in 2020, tied for the second-longest streak in WNBA history. The 2021 Minnesota Lynx season will once again be presented by Mayo Clinic.
