MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Lynx today announced the team has acquired center Alaina Coates from the Chicago Sky in exchange for its third-round pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft.
Coates, 24, appeared in 32 games as a rookie for the Sky in 2018, averaging 3.4 points (on 56.8% shooting) and 3.2 rebounds in 11.4 minutes per contest. She scored a season-high 10 points on two occasions (July 3 at Dallas, July 10 vs. Las Vegas) and produced a pair of 10-rebound games (Aug. 10 vs. Connecticut, Aug. 18 at Indiana). The Irmo, South Carolina native missed the 2017 season due to ankle surgery.
The second overall selection in the 2017 WNBA Draft, Coates left the University of South Carolina as their career leader in field goal percentage while ranking second in total rebounds, double-doubles and blocks. She was a four-time All-SEC pick (First Team 2016, 2017; Second Team 2014, 2015) and a two-time SEC All-Defense choice (2015, 2017). Coates helped guide the Gamecocks to four straight SEC regular season titles and trips to the Final Four in 2015 and 2017, culminating in the school’s first championship in 2017.
The Lynx will kick off their 21st WNBA season, presented by Mayo Clinic, by welcoming the Chicago Sky to Target Center on Saturday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. The 2019 campaign includes 34 regular season games and runs through Sept. 8.
