The Lynx find themselves with five picks in the 2019 WNBA Draft, more than any other team.

The picks are No. 6, No. 16, No. 18, No. 20 and No. 30.

It comes at a good time, too, with the franchise needing some youth and fresh energy to grab the baton from the previous era of Lynx stars.

While Lynx Head Coach and GM Cheryl Reeve said that there isn’t a “Breanna Stewart type” player in this draft, we’ve seen players go from mid-round draft pick to stars unexpectedly. That’s the fun thing about sports. With five picks, the Lynx give themselves more of a chance to land one of these players.

“The better chance of getting it right, so to speak,” Reeve said.

With having picks at the beginning, middle and end of the draft, Reeve’s staff has been extremely busy as we lead up to the draft.

“I think it’s the depth of the draft and then when you have five picks, you have to do a lot, a lot of research,” Reeve said. “So we have been more than any other year, we’ve been out and about, fully as a staff, the four of us combing the country and getting up to speed on all the prospects, not just the first-round picks, but all the way through the second-round and third-round picks. We’ve had decent luck with our third-round picks, so we don’t take any of these lightly.”

And with having five picks, Reeve and her staff also have some flexibility to move up in the draft, draft the rights to overseas players, or shift some picks to next year’s draft.

“Just having that ability to go in different directions is really important,” Reeve said.
