Fowles Moves To Fourth All Time In Blocked Shots

With a third-quarter swat against the Indiana Fever on Wednesday afternoon, Sylvia Fowles earned her 558th career block, moving her to fourth all-time in the WNBA in blocked shots. She passed Tangela Smith, who played in the WNBA for fourteen years starting in 1998.

The Lynx’s defense over the last several seasons has been anchored by their All-Star center. With Fowles roaming the paint, the Lynx have built an identity for themselves as one of the least fun teams in the WNBA to play against.

Fowles is a seven-time member of the WNBA All-Defensive First Team, and won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2011, 2013, and 2016. She averages 1.8 blocks per game over the course of her career. Her highest average was in 2010 when she swatted 2.5 shots per game as a member of the Chicago Sky, and her highest blocks per game number with the Lynx came last year when she averaged 1.9 per game.

It’s hard to imagine a Lynx team without the imposing presence of Fowles in the paint. She locks it down game in and game out—opposing players beware.

Fowles will be a participant in the WNBA All-Star Game on July 28, 2018, which will be held at Target Center for the first time in league history. Tickets are available here.
