Damiris Dantas Is Quickly Becoming A Franchise Centerpiece
When the Lynx signed Damiris Dantas this spring, it wasn’t considered a splashy signing. The young Brazilian forward was undeniably a rotation WNBA player but when it came out that she’d be starting for the Lynx it probably raised a few eyebrows.
Now, you’d be hard-pressed to find a team that wouldn’t want her in their starting lineup.
Dantas has been a hidden gem for the Lynx this year. She’s averaging 10.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game for the Lynx in 29 minutes and shooting an incredible 42.6 percent from deep.
There are two huge areas in which Dantas has outperformed expectations this year—three-point shooting and passing.
So far this season, Dantas has been the eighth-most productive three-point shooter in the league by makes per game. Of the top 10 players in makes, she is the third-most efficient shooter.
Dantas’ shooting has been both critical and unexpected. While she always had a sweet jumper, she has traditionally been more comfortable in the midrange. Early in training camp the Lynx made it clear that one of their big priorities was helping Dantas extend her range. Head coach Cheryl Reeve knew that adding a stretch big next to Sylvia Fowles could solve a lot of problems for the Lynx.
The location of Dantas’ threes is also important. She’s most comfortable shooting above the break threes (especially on the left side) which makes her a perfect pick-and-pop threat. Dantas has developed quick chemistry with Odyssey Sims (a lefty!) and Danielle Robinson, both of whom have figured out exactly where Dantas likes to shoot from. Sims and Robinson have assisted to Dantas 23 times this season.
Dantas isn’t just effective as a shooter, she’s great at facilitating the offense from the same spots she likes to shoot from. She’s developed great chemistry with both Napheesa Collier and Fowles. The synergy with Collier is particularly evident—the rookie is a great cutter and Dantas is often the one to get her the ball inside. Dantas has assisted to Collier 14 times this season, far and away the most among her Lynx teammates. While Fowles still gets most of her looks from Odyssey Sims, Dantas isn’t far behind, having assisted Fowles 10 times to Sims’ 16.
While Dantas’ signing might have flown under the radar, she’s emerged as one of the most important pieces of the Lynx’s core. Her late-game shot-making saved the Lynx in Indiana on Tuesday and she’s consistently produced down the stretch and hit big shots for her team. Dantas isn’t one to seek a lot of credit or recognition but she certainly deserves it.
