The start of the 2020 WNBA season may seem like it’s just around the corner, but Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has found another opportunity to squeeze in some more basketball before reporting to Minnesota for training camp.

On Tuesday, USA Basketball announced Collier has been named to USA Basketball’s Women’s 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament Team that will compete in the 2020 FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament March 18-22 in Bengaluru, India. There, the top three finishing men’s and women’s teams will earn berths into the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Collier will make up the four-player Olympic Qualifying Tournament Team with Chicago Sky’s center Stefanie Dolson, Dallas Wings’ guard Allisha Gray and Las Vegas’ guard Kelsey Plum.

Collier and her teammates were chosen from a pool of 11 hopefuls who tried out for the Olympic team during the Feb. 12-15 training camp in Chicago.

Per FIBA regulations, all 3×3 teams must include at least two athletes who are ranked among the federation’s top 10 FIBA 3×3 athletes. Collier, Dolson and Plum all meet that standard thanks to their prior participation with the 2020 USA Basketball Women’s National Team and the gold medals they have won with USA Basketball.

Olympic 3×3 is played on a half court with a 10-minute clock and a 12-second shot clock. Field goals within the arc are worth one point, while those made beyond the 3-point arc used in 5×5 basketball are worth two. The first team to 21 points, or the team in the lead at the end of the 10-minute regulation, is the winner.

This condensed form of basketball is foreign to some professional players, but not Collier.

In 2014, Collier helped her USA Basketball team win gold at the Youth Olympic Games, which is a 3×3 competition.  Collier competed with Arike Ogunbowale, Katie Lou Samuelson and De’Janae Boykin and averaged a team-high 8.5 points per game. Collier shot just under 70% from the field and 42.1% from beyond the arc in her team’s 13-game route to earning a gold medal.

Some of Collier’s top WNBA highlights from the 2019 season came from steals she converted into transition opportunities for her teammates or going coast to coast on her own. In the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Collier will have to rely on her halfcourt game, which is well-suited for 3×3 basketball.

In 3×3, players aren’t able to create fast break opportunities. Rather, they must create offense from basket cuts, screens and sufficient floor spacing — all of which Collier excels at. Defensively, Collier’s superior perimeter and helpside defense will be vital with fewer defenders playing alongside her.

The USA women will play in Group A with France, Germany, Uruguay and Indonesia at the qualifying tournament. Iran, Japan, Ukraine, Turkmenistan, Australia, Netherlands, Estonia, Belarus, Hungary, Sri Lanka, Italy, Taipei, Switzerland and host India will be vying for a top-three finish in Groups B, C and D.
