Rebekkah Brunson named to All-Star Game - July 6, 2010
Lynx Forward Rebekkah Brunson is named a WNBA reserve for the 2010 WNBA vs. USA Basketball game titled: The Stars at the Sun.
Yesterday, Brunson was one of six players selected by WNBA coaches as reserves for the WNBA stars against the U.S. Women's National Team. The showcase of the world's best female basketball players will be played on July 10 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Brunson said she felt honored and blessed to have been granted this opportunity.
"It means a lot," Brunson said. "It means that people recognize me, especially when you are on a team that does not necessarily have the best record. To be recognized as an individual player for all of the things that you do and all of the hard work that you put forth every time that you step on the floor and the way that you compete. It is a lot to be able to be seen throughout the league as somebody who is respected even though the team isn't necessarily doing the best."
Brunson currently ranks second in the league in rebounds per game (10.6 rpg), second in offensive rebounds per game (4.3orpg), and sixth in defensive rebounds per game (6.3 drpg).
Ever since she was acquired by Minnesota in the off-season from Sacramento, Brunson has posted career-best numbers across the board in 2010. She currently ranks 21st in the league in scoring, averaging a career-high 12.8 points per game. She's recorded seven double-doubles in 2010 (fourth in the league), matching Nicky Anosike's single-season club record set in 2009.
Brunson said not only is this a great personal accomplishment, but it's a great team accomplishment as well.
"It means a lot. It means that we are capable," Brunson said. "It means that even though we don't have a great record people are paying attention to us, people see us, and we aren't really invisible out there. And it shows that we have a lot of great players, it shows that we have a lot of potential and it shows that we are fully capable of turning this thing around."
Without her team behind her, Brunson feels she wouldn't have been able to get to where she is today.
"It is a great honor. I think that anybody would say it is an honor and I am excited about it. I am really thankful. But it has a lot to do with this team. Even though we are not performing the way that everybody had foreseen us to perform this year, I feel like they push me every day. I am out there working for them, so hats off to them as well."
