Sports Illustrated Feature Dives Into Whalen’s Dual Roles

Lindsay Whalen has had a busy year. On top of playing for the Lynx as their starting point guard, she is preparing for her first season as head women’s basketball coach for the University of Minnesota.

In last week’s Sports Illustrated, Steve Rushin (a Minnesota native), wrote on how Whalen is handling her jam-packed double life.

“The most Minnesota thing in the history of Minnesota is Lindsay Whalen crossing the Mississippi River beneath the landmark GRAIN BELT beer sign that greets drivers on the Hennepin Avenue Bridge, and saying, in a flat-voweled Minnesota accent that rhymes roof with hoof, “Maybe I’ll have a Grain Belt tonight.” It’s her 36th birthday, and she’s wearing her Golden Gophers jacket.”

Whalen is focused on the Lynx as they make their final playoff push, but she has a big job ahead of her as the head coach of the Gophers as well. Unsurprisingly, she’s balancing it all with poise. The story also featured photography by team photographer David Sherman.
