MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – After tonight’s victory in Washington, Lindsay Whalen has collected her 295th career regular season victory, passing Swin Cash (294) as the all-time leader in regular season wins. Whalen finished tonight’s game with two points and a game-high six assists in 19+ minutes, leading the Lynx to an 8-0 record for the second straight season.
“It feels great to do it with this great team and great organization that’s always given us so much support. We’ve had a great run together here and to have the most ever is pretty cool,” said Whalen. “It kind of hits you a little, because it’s been so fun to do it all these years. To say you have the most ever is pretty cool but it’s a team award. I couldn’t have done it without my great teammates over the years and I’m happy that could do it as a Lynx.”
In her 14th WNBA season, Whalen ranks as the franchise leader in assists, ranks second in games played and fourth in scoring. The three-time WNBA champion ranks third all-time in assists, trailing only Sue Bird and Ticha Penicheiro. Her impressive resume includes 12 playoff appearances, seven WNBA Finals appearances, three WNBA championships and two Olympic gold medals with Team USA in 2012 and 2016. Whalen was the first player in WNBA history with 5000+ points, 2000+ assists and 1500+ rebounds as well as one of six players in league history with 3,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists in a career.
“Ever since she arrived in Minnesota, Lindsay Whalen has represented what it means to be a Lynx in every facet including leading our team to three WNBA Championships,” said head coach Cheryl Reeve. “This is another outstanding accomplishment to add to her ever-growing resume. I’m so proud of everything she has done thus far and all that she will continue to do for our franchise and our league.”
Since arriving to the Lynx in a trade from Connecticut in 2010, the Hutchinson, Minnesota native and former Golden Gopher has led the Lynx to wins in 73.4 percent of their games, a total of 174 victories over 237 regular season contests. Over her 14-year career, Whalen has played in 434 career games and has averaged 12.0 ppg on 46.6% shooting and 5.1 apg.
The Lynx play next on Sunday, June 11 against the Dallas Wings at College Park Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT and the game can be seen on Fox Sports North Plus and heard on BOB 106.1 FM.
