The Minnesota Lynx kicked off their ‘Lynx Cares’ events last Tuesday by hosting a Reading Time Out as part of the ‘WNBA Cares’ initiative.

Lynx players Monica Wright and Damiris Dantas joined Lynx Mascot Prowl at Jenny Lind Elementary to share the importance of reading with over 70 students.

Students listened intently as Wright and Dantas read them a story before handing out many great Lynx prizes and posters. Students also got a chance to get their pictures taken with the players and Prowl before exploring the Lynx Book Mobile for the first time. The Book Mobile is filled with numerous different books for students to look at and read themselves. All students were able to choose a book to take home; something that the Lynx hope encourages students to continue reading throughout their lives. Lynx Radio Announcer John Focke saw the students’ selecting a book for themselves as a very important part of the event.

“Well the book mobile is really just to put books into the hands of these kids, but also to foster the love of reading for them and get them started down that path, and then hopefully it’s something that they continue on later on in life.”

Wright noticed how much the kids enjoyed the book mobile and noted the significance that such events have.

“It was a lot of fun. I’m surprised, as soon as I walked in the book mobile I was shocked as to how many books were there, how colorful it was decorated, and the kids just loved it. They received it right away and they were excited about being able to choose a book, and I think it’s good that we’re encouraging them to read.”
