The Minnesota Lynx look to build off of last Sunday’s season-opening win when they play in the first game of a two-game road trip on Thursday against the New York Liberty.
The Lynx and Liberty both enter the game with a record of 1-0 this season.
A few tidbits entering Thursday’s game:
- Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve was an assistant under Liberty head coach Bill Laimbeer from 2006-09 with the Detroit Shock.
- Rebekkah Brunson, who will be playing in her 400th career game, needs five rebounds to become the 5th player in WNBA history to collect 3,000 rebounds.
- Minnesota leads the WNBA in defensive rating (72.6), while New York is fourth (83.1).
Coming Off Of…
Minnesota is coming off of a 70-61 win over the Chicago Sky on Sunday in St. Paul.
Sylvia Fowles led the way for the Lynx, finishing with a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds. Maya Moore had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Lindsay Whalen had eight points and five assists, Seimone Augustus had seven points, five assists and four rebounds and Rebekkah Brunson had five points and nine rebounds.
New York is coming off of a 73-64 win over the San Antonio Stars on Saturday in New York.
Tina Charles had 12 points and seven rebounds and Epiphanny Prince had 11 points to lead the Liberty. Shavonte Zellous, Brittany Boyd and Cierra Burdick each added 10 points.
The Lynx held a 2-1 season series advantage over the Liberty a season ago. The last matchup came on July 15 in New York, where Minnesota came away with an 88-70 victory.
In that game, Augustus led the Lynx with 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Moore had 15 points and four rebounds, Janel McCarville had 10 points, Brunson had nine points and five rebounds and Fowles and Whalen each finished with eight points.
For New York, Charles had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Zellous added 11 points and four assists to lead the way. Carolyn Swords and Boyd each added eight points for the Liberty.
Thursday’s game is first game of three games between the two teams this season.
Key Matchup: Rebekkah Brunson vs. Tina Charles
The Minnesota post players will have their hands full with New York’s Tina Charles on Thursday night. Rebekkah Brunson will be matched up with Charles for most of the game, but expect both Brunson and Fowles to try and keep Charles in check throughout the game.
A season ago, Brunson averaged 7.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. In Sunday’s season opener, Brunson spent most of the game in foul trouble, but finished with five points and nine rebounds.
Charles averaged a career-best 21.5 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists last season. In the first game of the season, Charles finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
