Minnesota Lynx players Lindsay Whalen, Devereaux Peters and Janel McCarville spent Wednesday morning in North Minneapolis helping a local woman who has been part of her neighborhood for 50 years begin an exterior restoration project on her home through National Women Build Week, Habitat for Humanity and Lowes.
The initiative, which runs from May 4-12 and is expected to include more than 10,000 volunteers nationwide, challenges women to devote at least one day to help build affordable housing for their local communities.

On Wednesday, the Lynx trio joined about 60 volunteers with the goal of getting the home of Ora Lee Law prepped for painting. For McCarville, the act of women helping women was a symbolic message in throughout the event.
In a way, weve got to stick together, and this is one way of doing that, McCarville said. Oras been in this community a long time, she said 49 years. Shes been through a lot of weather, tornado, things like that. So the fact that were able to be here and help give back and make her house a little bit better from the outside, its great. Were happy to be here.
McCarville, Whalen and Peters were on hand for the opening ceremony, then took part in getting the house prepped for painting. Whalen said the group felt the sense of community involved in the project.
We feel like were a big part of Minneapolis and Minnesota and the surrounding communities, Whalen said. To be able to come here and be part of the neighborhood and part of the community is really cool.
Twin Cities Habitat For Humanity Chief Operating Officer Mary Schumacher said it was a pleasure having the Lynx on hand to take part in the event.
We are just really excited and grateful that the Lynx players volunteered to come here today and be part of our National Women Build kickoff, Schumacher said. These women are incredible role models in our community. Were so happy theyre here representing the Lynx and the state of Minnesota, and weve just had a ton of fun with them here today.
